Highlighting the Team’s work:

7/11/23: Congratulating BioE Phd Candidate Chia-Ming (Charles) Wang, who successfully proposed his PhD Thesis: The Development of a mesofluidic gut model for studying intestinal mucosal barrier

In this study, we proposed to develop a human mesofluidic gut model with cells grown on a vertical gel wall, which allows direct visualization of the impact of lumen contents on mucus barrier using a standard fluorescence microscope with optical sectioning capability (e.g., confocal). The ability of this mesofluidic gut model is to study the transport of bacteria and drug carriers within mucus and capture potential changes in the mucus barrier and associated inflammatory response upon exposure to agents we hypothesize to be mucus-disrupting: emulsifiers.

6/15/23: ChemE PhD Student Victus Kordorwu Presents at the 14th International Symposium on Frontiers in Biomedical Polymers

Kordorwu demonstrated that not only does mucus, a natural bio-polymer found in our body, mimic the behavior of biomedical polymers (e.g. HPMC and Kollidon VA 64) in stabilizing supersaturation of poorly soluble drugs but alters the performance of the polymers as well in that regard. This has immense consequences for in vivo performance of supersaturated drug delivery systems. For a better prediction of drug precipitation risk, appropriate mucus activity needs to be incorporated in the characterization and evaluation of supersaturated drug delivery formulations.

4/13/23: Congratulating Liam Bingham-Maas, who successfully defended his Master’s Thesis this morning: Factors Governing Triglyceride Digestion Kinetics and Implications for Dissolution of Co-Dosed Hydrophobic Drugs

Liam will be working at Lyndra Therapeutics moving forward – we will miss him in our lab and department, but look forward to keeping in touch and following what I have no doubt will be a highly successful career! Big thanks to Mansoor Amiji and Ambika Bajpayee for serving on Liam’s thesis committee, as well as Dr. Oljora Rezhdo for working very closely with and advising Liam throughout his thesis research.
